STOP. SHARE. EDUCATE. MAKE AWARE.
"The body of a transgender woman who went missing last week has been found. Fry is the sixth known trans woman to be murdered in the U.S. in 2018."
There is an outrageously staggering trend occurring in the "United" States over the last few years. In 2016, there were 23 documented Transgender homicides. In 2017 there were 26 documented homicides. These numbers are only the cases that had verified identities. There are innumerable accounts of law officials misgendering victims, causing the statistics to be skewed. Already this year, 2 out the 6 reported Transgender homicides were initially misgendered, and therefore not brought to light for weeks. If these hate crime statistics continue, we are looking at a heart wrenching 36 Transgender homicides this year.
Last year there 52 documented LGBT homicides documented. That number, again, is only constituting the deaths that were properly documented. Of those 52 hate crimes, 23 were Transgender. Almost half of our community's loss in 2017 were Transgender. Let that sink in for a minute....
There were five states that accounted for over half of the LGBT homicides last year. Leading the hate was Texas, reporting 7. Following was New York with 6, Georgia with 5, and Louisiana and Florida both reporting 4. Out of the 52 LGBT homicides reported last year, these five states account for 26 of them. The outdated, religious fanatic, close minded, violent, hateful way of life still present in our country is sickening. Truly nauseating.
Even with all the progress we have made as a community, there is still so much ground to cover. The presence of amazing organizations such as NCAVP, HRC, and Equality Texas are just a few of the activists fighting on the front lines of hate to educate and eliminate the fear based ignorance fueling attacks on LGBT members.
From the NCAVP's 2017 report:
"We are releasing this report during a time when our communities are witnessing the few civil rights protections and policies being rolled back and discrimination being instituted into law; when media organizations and organizations working with survivors are receiving an unprecedented number of stories of hate fueled attacks. While much of this violence is not new, but rather amplified, this past year has sparked a national conversation about the escalation of hate violence against so many marginalized communities. NCAVP hopes that sharing this information now will encourage people to reject anti-LGBTQ bias whenever it occurs, and to resist any hateful rhetoric or policies put forward by this administration or by legislators."
So far this year, there have been 6 Transgender homicides reported. Between the mental and verbal abuse that is causing an avalanche suicide rate, and the increasing homicidal occurrences being reported, one fact is glaringly obvious: Transgender individuals are being targeted twice as much as the rest of our community. We are losing beautiful souls to ignorance. We are losing kind hearted people to fear based hatred. We are grieving the loss of our loved ones because uneducated, hate filled monsters are running lose in our country and nothing is being done about it from a government standpoint.
We will not stand idly by while amazing people are brutally murdered. We will not remain quiet while assholes with an agenda beat our community down. We will not turn a blind eye to the sickening nature of our country. On the contrary, we will bring these wrongful deaths, these mass shootings, these hate crimes, these cases of bullying, these stories of torturous conversion therapy....all of it, all of it will be brought to light.
Do not allow these issues to continue going unnoticed and unresolved. Share this post. Educate the world. Show people the disgusting human nature we, as a community, are being faced with everyday. MAKE THEM TAKE NOTICE.
