It's thinking like this that has created the painful, sometimes fatal, internal battle between self and stigma. We've all heard it. We've all struggled to overcome these stigmas. But, is it any wonder that we struggle with our identities when there are still active hate groups, senseless violence and murder, and even conversion therapy? Conversion therapy is still legal in 41 states. FOURTY ONE STATES in the grand ol' U.S. of A still allow torturous conversion "therapy", with methods including:

Inducing nausea, vomiting, or paralysis

Providing electric shocks

Orgasmic reconditioning

Lobotomy

Numerous psychological and health organizations have repeatedly spoken out against the use and validity of conversion therapy.

The American Psychological Association “advises parents, guardians, young people, and their families to avoid sexual orientation change efforts that portray homosexuality as a mental illness or developmental disorder and to seek psychotherapy, social support, and educational services that provide accurate information on sexual orientation and sexuality, increase family and school support, and reduce rejection of sexual minority youth.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated: “Therapy directed at specifically changing sexual orientation is contraindicated, since it can provoke guilt and anxiety while having little or no potential for achieving changes in orientation.”

The Pan American Health Organization, a regional office of the World Health Organization, has stated that these practices “lack medical justification and represent a serious threat to the health and well-being of affected people.”

Homosexuality was removed from the DSM in 1987. Yet, even with the backing of the psychological and health organizations that dictate the standard for human health and behavior, SOMEHOW there are still 41 states that allow this brutal abuse. Enduring the brutality is only half of the battle. Once "therapy" is complete, there is still the unimaginable fallout of living a lie. The aftermath risks are innumerable.

Conversion therapy can be extremely dangerous and, in some cases, fatal. In 2009, the APA issued a report concluding that the reported risks of the practices include: depression, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, shame, social withdrawal, suicidality, substance abuse, stress, disappointment, self-blame, decreased self-esteem and authenticity to others, increased self-hatred, hostility and blame toward parents, feelings of anger and betrayal, loss of friends and potential romantic partners, problems in sexual and emotional intimacy, sexual dysfunction, high-risk sexual behaviors, a feeling of being dehumanized and untrue to self, a loss of faith, and a sense of having wasted time and resources.

The risks are even greater for youth.  Minors who experience family rejection based on their sexual orientation or gender identity face especially serious health risks. Research shows that lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults who reported higher levels of family rejection during adolescence were more than eight times more likely to report having attempted suicide, more than five times more likely to report high levels of depression, more than three times more likely to use illegal drugs, and more than three times more likely to report having engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse compared with peers from families that reported no or low levels of family rejection.

Before you go off spouting hateful, asinine rhetoric from the 19th century, think about the malleable youth you are speaking to, and causing pain. Is your outdated, uneducated opinion really worth a life? Is the need for your hatred to be acknowledged really so important that you don't consider the repercussions of your actions? What if it were your child, your own flesh and blood that you raised, cared for, sacrificed for? Would you beat them down? Would you spew your hatred relentlessly and blindly as you've displayed here today? Would you dismiss the depression, cries for help, pleas for love?

.....would you hand your child the noose?

Change a view. Change a life.
